FIVE MONTHS’ IMPORTS.
Tim value of the goods imported into New Zealand in the live months ended May 31 last amounted to £18,761,321, or £1,030,101 more than, in the corresponding period of last year, but is £6,000,000, or 33 1-3 per cent less than in the 1921 term, when the imports were valued at £24,716,421. The aggregate of the different divisions of imports for the five months, 1924 and 1923, compare as under:
The .hardware section shows a moderate increase of £370,329, and further expansion may he expected in this section because heavy importations of electrical machinery ‘and railway and tramway materials must be made for some time to come. The heave increase in foodstuffs is due to the necessity of importing wheat, the value of .imports for the five months being £336,337, against £69 in the corresponding five months of last year. Motor vehicles and petrol account verv largely for increase in the miscellaneous section. The imports of specie during the five months were onlv £196 as against £11.980.
