SWIMMING.

A RECORD. In view of Charlton’s striking success in the 1500 metres final at the Olympic Games, it is interesting to recall a wonderful practice swim by him prior to the competition events, which must eventually put at rest any doubt as to his condition. Swimming with Beaurepaire over 1000 metres, he soon had the Victorian beaten and finished in 13min 50sec, , lOsec better than Borg’s world’s record. La Piscine, at Destourelles, near Paris, where the Olympic swimming and' water polo contests will be held, is on immense concrete structure, and will accommodate 12,000 people. Access to the great open-air • bath, supported on enormous pillars, making the repair of leaks easy, is gained by climbing three floors. Furnaces beneath the pool, which is 50 metres long and 18 metres wide, keep the water at a temperature., of 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The almost, universal scope of the Olympic Games is shown by the fact that, the French Olympic Committee received official entries from 44 countries: Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, _ Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chili, China, Columbia, Cuba, Denmark, Egypt, Spain, Esthonia, United States, Finland, Fvanpe, Great Britain, Greece, Haiti, Holland, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Czecho-Slovakia, Turkey, Uruguay and Yugo-Slavia.
