ACTIVITIES IN WELLINGTON. MAN SERIOUSLY ASSAULTED. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, July IS. The activities of persons with burglarious intentions have been the subject of complaint from householders in various parts of the city and suburbs. Lately several premises were entered and articles removed. Mr Brook went up to investigate, and on reaching the landing a man sprang at him out of the shadows and knocked him down, and seriously assaulted him and then cleared out, leaving the unfortunate custodian lying oft the floor with his face considerably bruised by the man’s fist work. At one stage of the struggle MiBrook appeared to be getting the upper hand, but his assailant was more active and stronger. When Mr Brook’s wife returned home a little later she found her husband in a tottering condition. He declared that someone had tried to murder him, and then collapsed. Medical aid was summoned, and Mr Brook was found to be suffering from bruises and laceration at the back of the head. He is unlikely to }>e able to resume his duties for several weeks. The man gained admission by breaking a pane of the kitchen window, thus enabling him to release the catch. No booty was obtained. Parties of college students later engaged in a fruitless search for the miscreant.
