Mr P. J. Small, chairman of the Kairanga Coupty Council, president of the Dairy Farmers’ Union, will arrive Hawera on Monday, and will lie in the district for a few days. A cable message from Rome records the death of General Ricciotto Garibaldi, son of the famous Guiseppe. aged 77, the last of the Garibaldis. The Rev. J. AA. Baylis has been appointed to take charge of the Methodist Church in the Patea district, and will take up his duties on the 23rd inst. The death has recently occurred of Mrs John Cutler, of Remuera, Auckland, at the age of 88 years. Mrs Cutler’s husband died some 15 years ago, and was a member of the 58th. Regiment, seeing service in the Maori war at the Bay of Islands. Old colonists in the Auckland district will probably remember Cutler’s buses running between Auckland and Remuera in the ’eighties, a service that was maintained for about 10 years.
The death of Mrs B. Condon, of Hawera, removes one of the oldest and best respected pioneers in the district V\ ith her husband, the late Mr Patrick Condon, she came to Hawera many years ago, and had resided here ever since. She leaves a family of seven, two daughters—Miss Mary Condon and Mrs A. Searle— and five sons—two iarming at Te Roti, one in the police force at Wellington, one living at Tauranga, and one at Hawera. Mrs Kennedy of Waverley, and Mrs Manion. of AVanganui, are sisters. Mrs Condon had reached the ripe old age of .4, .and had enjoyed good health'until* tne last e week or two. Much sympathy will be .felt for the members of the rauiily iri their time of sorrow. The funeral will he held to-morrow afternoon.
‘V V % Y - P* easanfc feathering was held at Te Kiri last evening, when a farewell social was held in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Rees Jones, who have been residents of the district for the past twenty-three years, and who have been closely associated with the activities of the district, more particularly in connection with church work. Mrs. Jones was one of the prime movers in getting an Anglican, church built at Te Kiri, aipi both she and Mr. Jones have taken a lively interest in all church work. Addresses, in which highly complimentary references were made to the "uests given by Mr, Collins chairman or tho hall Mr. "Watson one of the oldest settlers; and Mr Rodger, church warden. In the course of the evening Mr. Jones was presented with a pipe and Mrs. Jones with a. cheque. The dancing music was provided by Mis. and Miss Collins. An excellent supper was served.
