KAPONGA.
ELECTRIC POWER SUPPLY. The electric jiower to the town of Kaponga was interrupted yesterday between the hours of 8 a.in. ami 5 p.m. to allow of the overhaul of the generator, which has been in commission for the past eight years on the plant supplying the town area. The repair work necessary entailed the renewal of the white metal linings to the bearings. These were removed at 8 a.m. and taken to Bltham, where an engineering firm effected the work in time to allow the bearings to be ■returned to Kaponga. and the machinery readjusted by 5 p.m. It speaks well for the life of the pattern of machinery used that after eight years of continuous running, an overhaul could be made m such a short space of time, and it is also to the credit of those responsible for the preparations that- the work was completed so promptly and with such little inconvenience to the town. The turbine from which the plant derives its power, also in commission for the same period, was recently subjected to a thorough overhaul, though on that occasion an interruption to the service was not necessary, as provision is made to furnish power to run the plant from the larger one at the dairy factory. QUEEN CARNIVAL. Another successful function in connection with the queen carnival in progress at Kaponga took place last evening, when a gathering of over one hundred residents of tlie district, including representatives from Eltham, Matapu, and Auroa, attended the social evening held .in aid of the sports queen candidate at the residence of Mr. C-. and Mrs. Crowley, on the Palmer Roacl. A pleasing programme of games and novelty competitions provided enjoyment for the guests, who were also entertained with instrumental and vocal items contributed. A euchre tournament .occupied a considerable portion of the evening, the ladies’ prize, after a play-off between Mrs. W. Thornhill and Miss Bevan, being secured by the former, while the gentlemen’s prize was won by Mr. J. Harper, and the respective trophies were awarded to Mrs. A. Freeman and ' Mr. J. Stevens. After supper an additional attraction was provided by a programme of dances, and the gathering dispersed in the early hours of the morning with expressions of thanks in appreciation of the courtesy of Mr. and Mrs. Crowley. In aid of the city queen candidate a euchre party and dance, which attracted a large number of supporters, was held in the Kapuni hall on Monday evening. A.s was announced prevL ously, the committee is arranging a sale of goods from a stall to be erected in Kaponga to-day. A further euchre party and dance is being held in the Convent schoolroom this evening.
