PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr. R. Semple returned to Wellington this morning. Detective-Sergeant Nuttall, of Wellington, who is well known in Hawera, passed through returning to Wellington this morning after a short visit to New Plymouth. Mr Brookfield, who has been lion, dentist to the Wanganui Hospital for 32 years, has been appointed lion, consulting dental surgeon to the institution.

Mr. C. Clarke, senior clerk and supervisor at the Stratford Post Office, has received notice of promotion to the position of supervisor at the Wellington telegraph office, but the actual date oi his departure lias not yet been notified. Mr. L. O. B. Loveridge, from the telegraph engineer’s office at Masterton, will succeed Mr. Clarke. Mr. \ . Trott, of the Eltham railway goods department, who has been transferred to Wellington, left by the express yesterday morning. Mr. J. Brown, of Wellington, replaces ’Mr Trott. ‘ Mr. C. J. Ryan, with 281 votes, has been re-elected to the Taranaki Land Hoard, his opponent in the election held during the past few days, Mr. N. R. Fletcher, receiving 137 votes. Twentytliree informal votes, were recorded. Sir Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand scientist, was yesterday presented with the Franklin medal at the British Foreign Office (states a London cable). The medal was awarded by the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, in recognition of Sir Ernest Rutherford's discovery of the principle of radioactivity.

Mr F. A. Dawson, lion, secretary and treasurer of the Wellington Centre, New Zealand Boxing Association, is in Hawera in connection with the Wellington Centre championships tournament, which will be held to-morrow and Saturday. Mr Dawson informs us that the centre executive are delighted with the arrangements made by the Hawera Boxing Association, which came to the assistance of the centre at short notice in connection with the tournament. The annual business meeting of the centre will be held at Hawera on Saturday.
