Time, 1.6. WELLINGTON MEETING. NOTES ON/THE RACING. ■ (ByvMaecenas.) WELLINGTON, July 14. After a boisterous night the Wellington Racing Club again were unlucky enough to have a. wet' and wintry day for the conclusion of their meeting. Despite these unfavourable conditions there was a big attendance and speculation was good, although it fell short of last year’s second day returns. Bettors installed Merry Singer (£1400) a. big favourite for the Talawera Hurdles, Admiral Codrington with £875 being second choice, with Earthshine and Demand, about £675 each, also well supported. After Big Push had led for about six furlongs, Royal Fame took a hand at pace-making. At the straight entrance Merry Singer went to the front, but tripped badly at the last jump, and in a good finish Gold Piece got up to beat Merry Singer, with Demand and Earthshine next. The Liverpool Handicap produced a fine betting race, Ecuador, with Gray in the saddle, carrying just over £I4OO, while Soliform with £IOOO and Lady Fingers and Avonlea, just about £750, each had their admirers. From, a good start Wassail, Soliform and Lady Fingers comprised the, early leaders, and were still disputing the lead over the final furlong, when Lady Ridicule and Boadicea joined issue. A fine finish took place, Wassail hanging on to just beat Lady Ridicule, with Boadicea and Soliform close up. Fireblight, with £1650, was a big favourite for the Hack Steeples, Kohu (£B/5) and Rowan (£775) being next-in the order of favouritism. Over the first round Killard, Guanaco, Rowan and Fireblight was the order, but a mile from home Guanaco went to the lead from Kohu and Fireblight. Guanaco was the first to turn for home,, but at the final jump Fireblight and Kohu were almost level, but once over Fireblight drew out to win easily from Guanaco, while Kohu broke down badly and pulled up. Proclaim had most admirers for the Crofton Handicap, and carried just over four figures. Next in demand were Knighthood (£850), Te Kawa (£750) and Ivilfaire (£600). From the barrier rise Puketoi, Cambee and Tussore began well and led Knighthood and Mountain Signal into the straight. When in a line for the winning post Knighthood took charge, and for a distance looked certain to win. when Kilfaire came with a great run to beat Knighthood by half a length, with Prompter and Bright Eyes next. The Wellington Steeples produced a good betting race' and a fine exhibition of jumping. Mahuru, who ran off, was the only one of the seventeen runners which failed to go the course. Valla nee’s pair (Mahuru and Sturdee), with about £I2OO, had the largest following, but San Forte (£1100), Dick '(£925), Omahu (£880) and the Hazzletbracket (Pamplona, and Galway) each claimed many admirers. When the barrier rose Kovno was first to show out, and led over the initial jump front Te Maire, Mahuru, Gang Awa’, Galway and Pamplona. As the field left the straight Kovno and Te Maire had a lead from Mahuru, Gang .Awa and hirst Line. A.t the stand the second time, Kovno still led from Omahu, Mahuru, Galway and Pamplona. Going up the back stretch Pamplona took charge, and six furlongs from home had a useful lead over Omahu, First Line, Carawock, .LochGlla and Dick. For tjic next, half-mile there was no alteration of the positions, and approaching the last jump Pamplona was taken for a gap made in (he fence. This allowed Omahu to gain a couple of lengths. A furlong from the post the. pair were locked together, and in a great finish Omahu (ably handled by L. Morris) beat Pamplona by about a neck. Garawock was some lengths back in third place, just in front of First Line, while the next to finish were Dick and Loehelia.

As anticipated, Yoma (£1750) was a very hot favourite for the Winter Oats, Arch Salute, with just on his t-otal, being second choice, and Prince Ferouz and comical with £BOO each followed. When the tapes rose Princ Ferouz and Yoma began best, the latter immediately taking up the running. After going half a furlong, Winning Hit took charge, and he led Yoma, Printemps. Merry Day and. Arch Salute till rounding the home turn. When in a line for the post Gray took Yoma out wide on to the good going, but by this time Arch Salute had got to Winning Hit, and going on, Arch Salute won easily from Winning Hit, with Comical close up third, and Yoma and Prince Ferouz (easing up) fourth and fifth. Rose of Athens’ number was hoisted, fourth, but there is no doubt that Yoma occupied that place. Maunga was made an absurdly short price favourite for the Final Hurdles, and after tailing off most of the way he fell at thedast jump. En Route and Solfanello led over the first mile from Captain Sarto and Nukumai. Solfanello had a good lead rounding into the straight, but once over the last jump Nukumai drew out to beat Solfanello easily. Lockson, after running a good race, was third and Vagabond fourth.
