MOTOR ACCIDENTS.
Two motor-car accidents took place in the vicinity of New Plymouth on Saturday. One was a collision on the Waitara Road, opposite the Smart Road freezing works, and the other was a collision between a car and an electric light pole on the Junction 'Road. In the first case it is reported that while one of the big ’buses owned by Messrs Johnston and Son, of Waitara, was proceeding from New Plymouth to Waitara late in the afternoon, engine trouble was encountered near the Smart Road freezing uorks. Communication was made with a New Plymouth garage, an ( ] a motor mechanic yvas dispatched to the scene of the breakdown. The mechanic (Air. L. M. Smith) states that he drew the car up about 4ft. in front of the big ’bus. with the headlights playing full on to the front of the machine to enable him to see when effecting the necessary repairs to the engine. It is stated that when he had been working for about twenty minutes he noticed a car proceeding in the direction of New Plymouth. The approaching car struck the rear of the mechanic’s car, the impact causing the stationary car to strike the front of the ’bus and drive it back. It is stated that the car which struck the mechanic’s car was driven by a man named Orr, a motor mechanic. A lady who was travelling with him in the front seat was cut about the face by flying glass from the shattered windscreen,
The other accident took place on the Junction Road, several chains on the New Plymouth side of the Kent Road post office. As a result of the accident Jacob Jacobsen, of Midhirst, was removed to the New Plymouth public hospital suffering from scaln wounds, It is understood that Jacobsen was driving a car in the direction of New Plymouth, and while negotiating a cor. ner he met a motor lorry travelling towards Inglewood. In order to avoid a collision he swerved off the road and struck a pole, the impact causing all the wires to break, while the pole was pushed to an angle of about 45 degrees. The front portion of the car was considerably damaged. , Jacobsen’s injuries are not serious, and it is expected that he will leave hospital this week.—News.
