“We’ve got a credit balance of 2s 7d.” Tliat was the boast of Mr. R. 0. Bishop regarding the finances of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand at a meeting held in 'Christchurch. The problem of raising the financial wind was the chief item of discussion of the Court of Directors fo the society. For the last month receipts amounted to £2l. 10s 6d, plus a. balance in hand of £33 18s lOd. The expenditure was £55 6s 9d, leavino- a credit balance of 2s 7d. “1 object to the adjournment, Your Worship. My client is being continually taken away from his work to attend maintenance proceedings, which invariably lapse for want of prosecution,” said Mr. J. B. Batchelor to Mr. Wyv.ern Wilson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch. ‘‘What does lie dor” asked the magistrate. “Er —he’s a barman, Your Worship.” ‘‘Oh, well, T suppose he will be able to get here in the mornings. I don’t suppose he’s busy then, is ho:-”’ “Well.
