Robert Lebaudy, a multi-millionaire sugar refiner, who is brother of the self-styled Emperor of Sahara, was defendant in a breach of promise case, in which Mrs Mendham, an American widow, suefkliim for £20,000. She gave evidence that she had been twice married, and after Mendham J s deafh she met Lebaudy. in 1916. They became on terms of the greatest affection. Lebaudy proposed to marry her in America, but -when the Emperor of Sahara was shot by liis wife in 1919 Robert was so upset that he refused to go to America, and now he would not marry her.
