Th;it some 50 tenders should be received from builders for the work of making additions to a residence in a district well outside the Greater A tick, lin'd area seems almost incredible, yet such is a fact, and this for a job running into about £2OO. and the man who got the job lives 5() miles away from the place. From inquiries made by the Auckland Star it was learned that there is a distinct easing off in the building trade, with the result that competition amongst builders in tendering for jobs is particularly keen, so much so that one architect went so far as to say that in many instances builders took contracts at prices which could only result in a loss if the plans and specifications were adhered to. This referred, of course, to small jobs, and then the architects were compelled to make extra inspections of the work as it progressed, as a contractor once he realised the position, would try and make up the loss. The day of the building boom had passed, and to he a successful tenderer now a contractor had to work at bedrock prices.
