NEW HOPE
THE ENTENTE CORDIALE. BEST DAY SINCE ARMISTICE. TWO PRACTICAL MEN. CABII— PREBB ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, July 10. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Express says that M. Herriot (the Premier), after his final conversation with Mr Ramsay MacDonald, declared: “This is the best day'for the Entente Cordiale since the Armistice. It is the beginning of a new era in Europe. I am very satisfied.”
M. Herriot said that there was every reason for satisfaction, for the optimism produced by the conversation would make it most likely that he would secure a majority in the Senate, which, yesterday, appeared most problematical. Mr MacDonald told pressmen prior to leaving Paris: “We are not magicians, but simply two practical men friendship. We are not trying to apdetermined to create Franco-British pear to jbe friends; we really are friends. We have succeeded in making a substantial beginning at, removing a complicated series of Franco-British misunderstandings, which have grown up during the past few years.” As Mr MacDonald’s train steamed out from Paris, M. Herriot, speaking to French officials, said:' “Mr MacDonald is a fine fellow. He has done everything possible. We worked specially hard, and now agreement is complete. We enter the conference with a single programme.” - Mr MacDonald’s twentv-four hours in Paris were most strenuous. He conferred with M. Herriot almost continuously from the time of his arrival till 2 o’clock in the morning. He resumed at ten and continued till one, when he lunched with a distinguished company, including M. Poincare, M. Briand, M. Barthou, M. Painleve and M. Nolley.
The Paris correspondent of the Daily Telegraph emphasises the importance of the passage in the Note implying that inter-Allied debts ’ .security came within the scope of the conversations. WASHINGTON, July 9. While withholding official comment pending a complete analysis of the situation, some Government officials are inclined to regard the arrangement between M. Herriot and Mr MacDonald, whereby the United States will be given a full vote on the Reparations Commission,,ns.one which will not work from the viewpoint of the United States.
