Air J. G. AI. Brewster, engineer to the Akitio County Council, has been appointed engineer to the Waimea County out of 23 applicants.—Press Association. A London cable states that Viscount Parrie left the whole of his estate in trust for his wife during her lifetime. The total is not ascertainable, but the death duties exceed £1,000.000.
Our Alanaia correspondent writes: The citizens of Alanaia and district will regret to hear of the death at Waitara yesterday of Eugene John' Badley, son of Air and Airs Joseph Badlev, of Waitara, and brother of Air W. Badley, town clerk, Manaia. Deepest sympathy is extended to his relatives.

Air P. Hally Conciliation Commissioner, arrived by the Rarawa at New Plymouth, to-day to hold a sitting of the Conciliation Council. The disputes for hearing concern the New Plymouth General Labourers’ Union and the waterside Workers’ Union.
iL III the Legislative Council yesterday the Hon. Sir Walter Carncross was unanimously re-elected Speaker. Several councillors spoke in congratulatory terms, and Sir Walter expressed thanks tor the honour conferred upon him., iiie Council also passed resolutions congratulating the Prime Alinister upon, the twelfth anniversary of his entry to oltice, and expressing appreciation of the services of Sir Francis Bell who has completed 11 years as leader of the Council.—Press Association.

Superintendent W. Fouhv is at present making his final tour of inspection ol the Wanganui district The Superintendent will be retirincr on August 13, alter over 40 years’ service it is the intention of the members of the local force to give their chief a real good send-off on the eve of his retiring. It is understood that Superintendent Fouhy will take up his residence iu Canterbury, where he served as a member of the force foe many years.
Gipsy” Pat Smith, who is at present conducting a mission in Dunedin, suffered a breakdown yesterday,-and was unable to continue his mission. He will leave for the north to-dav, en route for Scotland. Dr. Carmalt Jones and D*". North state that the missioner is suffering from serious exhaustion, consequent on a prolonged period of missionary work, involviftg considerable strain, and is quite unfit to continue his work and must take a prolonged rest, otherwise he will suffer a severe nervous breakdown,—Press Association.
Under the heading Alusie and a Sweet Singer,” the Balclutha Leader has the following reference to Mrs. R. A. Brewer, who is perhaps better known to music-lovers as Aliss M. Mitchell, daughter of Air. and Mrs. J. K. Alitchell, of Patea The paper says: “A notable feature of the entertainment was the singing of Airs R A. Brewer, L.T.C.L., L.A.8., who’ was making her. first appearance on a concert platform in Balclutha. Airs. Brewer is the very fortunate possessor of a flexible soprano voice of rare quality and culture, and her artistry is undeniable. It is not often that a singGr of the calibre of AXrs Brewer is heard in Balclutha.”
Air F. H. Bake well, senior inspector of schools of the Wellington education district, who retired from the service on June 30, received a presentation from the officers of the department the inspectors, and staff of the board, to mark their appreciation of relations existing between them for many years. In presenting Mr Bakewell with a substantial cheque, ~r Burns > inspector, said that all his fellow-workers had found in Air Bakewell a wise counsellor, and one ready to help through any difficulties, and willing to assist in any matters even outside their profession. Air J. Caughley, Director of Education, said that the splendid work which Air Bakewell had accomplished in the Wellington district was highly appreciated. Mr G. L. Stewart, secretary of the board, also paid a tribute to Mr Bakewell’s ability and courtesy, and said that the feeling in the office at his retirement was one of regret, for he had been their friend always. Cheers were given for Afr and Mrs Bakewefl.
