Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Field prophesied that the time was near when tlie petty differences between England and America, would melt away as the mists disappear in San Francisco harbour. “Aly heart is full at this great welcome,” lie.added, “but this evidence of great friendship is not to be wondered at, for in the hearts of all true Americans and Britishers is the spirit of true friendship. We who speak the same language and come from the same stock are after all fundamentally working for the peace of the world and the good of mankind.” Admiral Field extolled the virtues of the merchant marine, declaring that in time of war the commercial craft made possible the victories of the fighting cmft. America, like England, should build and maintain a merchant marine.
