MANAIA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Manaia State School Committee was held on Friday evening last, Mr J. Dakers presiding. It was decided to hold a working bee at an early date, when planting and other improvements will be undertaken. The date to be chosen for the working bee will probably be Arbor Day. It is proposed to plant a protective belt of lawsonianas between the playground and the schoolmaster’s residence. The secretary reported that subsidy had been granted on the cost of concrete paths, saddle shed, library fittings, and picture frames. Applications for subsidies in respect of stone fencing, piano, and'extension of playground were under consideration, pending receipt, of certain particulars. Messrs S. J. Bennett and C. Jones were appointed visiting members for the ensuing month. The headmaster reported having received gifts of engravings, which were now suitably framed and hung, in the classrooms. These were portraits, of Lords Jellicoe and Kitchener' and Admiral Beatty. There was also a fine picture of the battleship Hood. The committee considered a complaint alleging that children had been kept in school after closing time. Disapproval was expressed, but no action was taken.
