RETAIL PRICES.
STATISTICIAN’S LATEST RETURNS
The index number for retail prices in the three food groups as at May IS was 1609, an increase of four points over that for the previous month (1605) and of 50.37 per cent over that for July, 1914. Very little movement was recorded in the groceries group, 'the index (1771) being one point higher in M a v than in April. A rise of 21 points in the dairy products group was due to a rise in the price of eggs in several towns and of milk in one or two major towns. The index number for the meat group.fell two points. Very few changes took place in prices in this group, the xall being due to decreases in one or two minor items.
