LONDON WOOL MARKET. LONDON, July 3. The wool sales were firm at opening rates, but there were heavy withdrawals owing to the high protective reserves. ' The Bradford tops market displays a more optimistic tone for merinos, but the business is small. Crossbreds are unchanged. The potato market is still slipping amongst the merchants, i.e., the grower is not yielding much to the subsiding movement from £7 to £7 5s f.o.b. sacks in less than a fortnight ago to £6 4s. This marks the recession. As a matter of fact a substantial parcel was offered this morning for AugustSeptember delivery at £6 f.o.b. sacks in, but acceptors were ladling. The Navua was booked- to. sail from Lyttelton to-day with 1500 sacks, and the Atua, which is sailing in a day or two, will carry another small consignment A few growers have sold at £5 5s on trucks, which leaves' the merchant on the wrong side of the ledger with the f.o.b. sacks in. price of £6 to £6 ss. Offers of £5 a. ton are scouted bv glowers, who think the irregularity of shipping from Australia and the lateness of the season will divert exclusive attention next month to Canterbury. Oats are very quiet, due to oversellers for the past month having covered. However, there are practically no oats about ; f.o.b. sacks in quotations are 5s 2d.
Chaff is very firm, and sales have been made at up to £7 10s on trucks at nearby stations, the general quotations however, being from £7 to £7 ss. There is naturally not such a shortage of chaff as oats, hut the local -and \fost Coast trade so far is- absorbing most of the offerings'. Tliot o is practically no c-haiioe. in seeds.
