Mr A. (Ranji) W 7 ilson, the wellknow’n All Black forward and Netiv Zealand selector, is managing the Wellington representative - football team visiting Haw’era. Mr. J. A MeCallum of by' the mail train this morning en route for Australia, where he intends to spend the next two months.
The London Daily Express says that Mr. James O’Grady, Socialist member for Leeds, is likely to be Governor of Tasmania.. He was promised the ambassadorship in Russia, ' but M. Tchitcherin asked that a trained diplomat be appointed. The selection of IVIr. O’Grady is .subject to the approval of the Tasmanian Government.—Cable message. Mr Mrs. and Miss Ross, of Eltham, who left that tow r n for Prankton Junction by this morning’s express, were given a most enthusiastic send-off at the station, a very large number of friends coming down to iwish them luck. For a week there has been a series of functions arranged in their honour, a testimony to their great popularity.
. The health- of the chief electrical engineer to the Government, Mr. L. F. Birks, has been causing serious anxietv to his family; and friends. Mr • Birk*s underwent an operation at the weekend, which indicated that his condition was not so serious as w’as supposed while he was in Australia, w’here he was taken seriously ill on his way to the World Power Conference in London. Master Joe Gray, son of Mr. Hector G r a.v, was a passenger from England by the Remuera, and arrived in New Plymouth on Monday night. He has been away from. Now Zealand for four years, having spent the last eight months in Switzerland.
S. F. Collier, of the staff of the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court office, received notice of his transfer to Greymouth. He has been succeeded at New* Plymouth by Mr; J S Macdonald, of Wellington. 0/ 1 Monday evening, at the Eltham Club rooms, members assembled in full force to say farewell and make 'a presentation to one of their prominent members, Mr. W. D. Boss. The president, Mr. H. D. Forsyth, presided, and the evening was devoted to musical numbers, toasts, etc., proceedings being of a most cordial nature. The departlng member w-as presented with a set or silver-mounted pipes and a tobacco pouch The recipient suitably acknowledged the kindness which prompted the gifts.
