S;a ‘‘ ted i" stewards’ -After his good displays oyer the batnu nS t’ a a s . a surprise to find lenterfieM fencing badly at the Haiyke s Buy meeting. Possibly jhe Austrafian-bred gelding was' not quite himself, and it will, come as a surorrie to niany should Tenterfield no Win ueil in such rapes as the Whiter Hurdles the Grand National Eaze which won the Hun tGlub Onp at Hastings on Saturday last, is Avell enough bred to win any cup or handicap m Australasia, and a s he is onlv a he may take high honours bcioi-e retiring. Certainly v tlie breed in a ot .baze suggests something better than a Hunt Club competitor, although it may be stated that a number of oiu best chasers qualified in the .hunter class. ' u , Miss Egypt showed good form each cay of the last Auckland meeting, and if brought south for the Wellington meeting will carry plenty of support from northerners. Lochelle lA’ent out to contest the Great Northern Steeplechase early m the current month lie looked like a o-year-old, but as a matter of fact tins gelding is nearly 14-wears old: ilns may be detrimental Avhen called oil to imn over a long and tiring journey Nevertheless, Bochella will run ", el , I1 1 l f-ke Wellington Steeplechase ii started. Considering his Auckland form. Lochson is not badly treated in the Wintei Hurdles, to be decided at the forthcoming meeting at Tret-nham, and if landed at the post as well as Tfrent.Jj 1 i as 18 , ' va - s at Ellerslie, Lochson will have plenty of admirers, for there is no doubt that this gelding is good but I would prefer Iris chance better it the Winter, Hurdles were'two 7 in place, of two and a quarter miles. The hack events to be decided at the coming Wellington .meeting contain licnses that are likely, to do AA'ell in their respective class of race during the next twerim mouths. Aiia t one of the first eight horses in the Hack Steenlechase Te Aro Hack, or Yittori* Hack Hurdles,' iveuld ha quite able to hold their OAvn in most ooen' races even today.
„ fkat once promising ’chaser Master i eter, which went wrong on the eve of the Diuiedrii AA’inter meeting, is now trained hy T J. Thistleton at Oirari. As Master Peter figures in the Qrand National Steeplechase it would appear as if the breakdoAVu Aims not a se\ 7 eve one.
Owner-trainer R, Hannon .is sending Royal Abbey and King Abbey across to Australia to race, but AvillHot accompany his jumpers, which Avill be under the care of J. Williamson. As that trainer is usually successful on Austrar. lian courses the hurdlers named should at least nay ex’s. '
Like many former years, the Winter Cup to lie decided at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s coming meeting, is rich in promising hacks or ex-hacks. Among those Avhich coihe under this category are Yonia, Sprinkler, Cairo, Te Kawa, Merry Singer, Tussore,' Reveniia.; Los Ambus, Wassail and Carpentier. There are others, too, ivhTch might be mentioned . but those named form a formidable list, and any of them are “possibles” in the big southern mile/race. •Generally, there are some surprise entries .for the Grand .Nationals, but this year’s list is practically free from, such nominations, arfchough, the name .of Income appearing -amongst those nominated in the Grand National Hurdles w.ill cause some surmise. As t-lie name! of Income does not figure in the Winter Cup list, 'we may 7 assume that Trainer P. Johnston intends giving the son of ;Guiariforte a Grand National Hurdje race preparation. ' There will be no racing in the Dominion this week, hut the Wellington Racing .Club’s meeting takes place on W ed lies day and Saturday of next iveek. Although goqd, the nominations received for the Av.i liter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club fall short of many former years, both in number and class. The last couple of AA’inter meetings held at Tlrentham hai 7 e extended over three days, and this Tio doubt Avas a big;' draw. The fact that Lochson, Vagabond and First Born figure at the head of the Winter Hurdles Handicap is proof that Ave are not strong in hurdle racers just noAv. And from what one can gather things are Averse in this class of irace in Australia, "When one considers the good, prizes to be Avon .with a good hurdle horse, it is strange that more horses are not jumped during the Avinter.
In the Great Northern Steeplechase Lochella ran a great (race for just on three miles, and for at. least 2| miles was going as well as any of his opponents, if we except Sir Rosebery. Mr Coyle did not see his performance, as he was engaged at Otaki. Had the Wellington Racing Club handicapper been present at Ellerslie, it is doubtful if Lochella would have got off with 10.7 in the Wellington Steeplechase. These so-called ‘ lias-been s’’ have a habit of producing something like their best when least expected, and if Lochella improves from his last performance he will cause a lot of bother.
