He was-tending tlie fire when a series of sharp 7 reports rang out, -and. Mr. Boyd was startled to -find millets whistling around him Hejieat a. hasty-retreat, amidst a shower of the missiles, none of which, fortunatdy, struck him (states the Christchurch Press). Subsequent investigations revealed the remains of a box of pea-rifle cartridges, which hn j been lost or hidden in a patch of gorse. These had been exploded by the heat of the lire. •
A deputation from the Alliance .of Labour asked the Minister for, Labour that provision be made in the Workers’. Compensation Act for an injured worker receiving full, pay during the period of his incapacitation, and also that special juries in cases of claims for-compensation -for accidents be done away with. The members of the Hawera Operatic Society . are notified that the usual practice has been postponed till Friday, July 4. Full scores have arrived and will:'.be distributed at the practice. Members are requested to be nresent in full force.
The competitions'* committee of the Hawera Male Choir have arrangements well in hand for a grand musical'and elocutionary competitions festival which they propose holding about the e*nd of, August. Both children and adults are well catered for in the large and varied schedule of classes, which will be ready next week.
The Rev. Howard Elliott will be present at the adjourned annual meeting of the P.P.A., to be held to-morrow (Wednesday) evening in the Methodist Hall.

In the awards in the essays section published yesterday-two of the names in the Std., YI, girls’ were wrongly printed. The-first prize was gained by Marjorie McGlashan (Meremere), and the third by Mavis Gedye (Wairon D.H.S.). , A request that the Shearers’ Accommodation Act be more strictly enforced was made by the Alliance of Labour to the Minister for Labour , (says a Press Association message). A deput-a-tation asked that the inspectors should visit stations before and not after the season, and it was asked that. provision should be made for hot and cold baths and better dining and seating accommodation. Improvements were also wanted.in regard to killing pens. The Minister promised to make enquiries.
