AUSTRALIA’S POPULATION.
THREE YEARS’ INCREASE. The Commonwealth Statistician has made available the figures of the estimated population of Australia as at March 31 last. The total population of - h ,®.„ C °mni o »wealth was set down at 5,777,262. an increase of 341,528 since the census was taken in April, 1921. The following figures show' the estimated population in the various States and 'ierritoyies of the Commonwealth at March 31 last:— x- ~ , Persons. New South M ales 9 217 981 Victoria 1,637,478 Queensland South Australia 526 541 Western Australia 356 469 Northern Territory ] 3572 Federal Capital Territory ... 3,677 Tatal 5,777,262 Of the increase of 115,387 for the year the excess of births over deaths was 77,969. while the excess of arrivals over departures accounted for 37 418 persons. ’ The details of the increases for the year in the various States are as follows : ■ / New South Wales 34 786 X ictori ‘? 36,901 Queensland 22 131 South Australia 11453 Western Australia 10,640 Federal Capital Territory ’319 Tasmania during the year showed a loss of 825 persons, and the Northern Territory a loss of 12 persons.
