Mr. Pfercy Miller, who has put more money into- the breeding industry in .the last few years than any other man in the Southern Hemisphere, and whose Kiora Stud shelters the English stallions, Magpie, Demosthenes, Nassau and Sarchedon, has purchased the high-class English horse, Saltash, from Lord Astor, and that horse will leave for Australia on June 24. To say that Saltash will be an acquisition to the bloodstock of this country -would be to put things mildly, as he is, perhaps, the highest class English horse that has ever been purchased by an Australian breder. Saltash was not only a good performer, but he is bred on the* most fashionable lines, and is a chestnut horse of fine quality and very commanding appearance. Saltash was not over raced, as he was trained by that master, Alec Taylor, who does not believe In hurrying his horses until they are thoroughly matured. As a. result, Saltash only r&ced once as a two-year-old, and it was only for educational purposes. As a three-year-old he faced the starter seven times, and won his last three races. His first race was in the Craven when lie was fourth to Light- Hand, Top Gallant, and Ellangovran. He was sixth in the Two Thousand Guineas, and occupied the same place in the Derby. Papyrus. Parth. Doric and Twelve* Pointer, all high-class horses, finishing in front of him.
Alec Taylor usually has his three-year-olds at their best by the time the Ascot meeting comes round, and Saltash won his first race at that meeting, taking the AYaterford Stakes, of 1 mile, valued at £ll7B. His, next start was the Eclipse Stakes, at Sandown, and ridden by Brennan, he won that valuable race, worth £8735, easily, from that good fillv Teresina, and Duncan Gray third, while half a dozen of the best horses in England finished behind him. At Goodwood Saltash continued his winning vein, and with odds of 5 to 2 laid on him. Bullock salelv steered him home in the Gatwieke Stakes, of £I2OO, If miles. In all, Saltash won £11.113 in *stakes.
Saltash did not run again, and it is safe to say that Mr. Miller had to go to, a very high nrice. probably something like £IO,OOO to buy him. as his blond lines are the most fashionable in England at the present time. He is by Sunsta.r from Hajnoaze. bv Torpoint fson of Trenton) from Maid of the Mist bv Ovllcne from Sceptre bv Persimmon. Maid of the. Mist was Sceptre’s first fiutl, and is the. dam of Sunnv Jane, winner of the Oaks, and dam of Bright Knight, and also Crag an Eran. a good winner and second in the Derby Salta,sh is a. full brother to Buchan, one of the greatest horses of modern times iu England, and now standing at a fee of 40flgns. Tamar, who was also second in the Derby, is a half brother ly Ti acerv. Mr. Miller does not intend to race Salta,sh. and he will he given twelve months’ spell before commencing his stud duties.
