PARLIAMENT

BUSINESS COMMENCES. BILLS INTRODUCED. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, June'27. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. Speeches of condolenc were delivered in connection with the deaths during the recess of the Hon. Dr. A. K. Newman, the Hon. C. Louisson, and Mr Gilbert Carson, an ex-member of the Council. The Council placed on record its sense of' the distinguished services rendered to the Dominion by each of the deceased, and decided to tender assurances of its sympathy with the relatives in their bereavement. The Hon. M. Cohen gave notice to ask whether the Government proposes to introduce legislation this session providing for superannuation for matrons and nurses of public hospitals. The Council adjourned at 9 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. to-morrow, when it will deal with the Imprest Supply Bill. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m.

Replying to Mr H. Poland (Ohinemuri), the Hon. A. D. McLeod (Minister for Lands) said Cabinet 'had allocated £25,000 as relief to settlers w-ho suffered hy the floods on the Hauraki Plains. The Commissioner of Lands and the chief drainage engineer had been instructed to-enquire into the cases of individual requirements. Money would he lent to settlers at 5 per cent, but all other terms had not yet been determined. The money would be available for grassing, fencing, etc., and applications should be made at the Crown Lands Office at Auckland. The following Bills were introduced read a first time: Summer Time Bill (Mr T. Iv. Sidey) ; Wellington City Empowering and Amendment Bill (Mr. R. A. Wright); Wellington City j ahiatua Endownment Sale :Empower,BillJMr A - Wright); Justices or the Peace Amendment Bill (Mi* T M. Wilford).

The House then proceeded to discuss amendments moved during the eonm£ at i2 n of tJie Imprest Supply Bill. The House rose at 1.55 a.m.
