IRELAND

THE FREE STATE. MINISTER; AT WASHINGTON. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WASHINGTON, June 26. The State Department has announced the receipt of Britain’s formal notification that henceforth the Irish Free State would be represented at Washington by its own Minister, who is to be empowered to deal directly with the United States on matters exclusively relating to the Free State. _ Mr - F. E. Hughes (Secretary for State) informed Sir Esnie Howard (British Ambassador) that' the United States cordially approves of the arrangement. The British Embassy will, however, continue to negotiate on matters which concern the Dominions generally.

The identity of the first Irish Minister has not been disclosed, but Dublin reports indicate that the Free State has already selected Professor Thomas Smiddy, who is now resident here.
