JEW ON STEAMER

ATTEMPT TO COMMIT SUICIDE

(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, June 27. Upon the arrival of the steamer Port Augusta from New York to-day, a member of the crew, Paul Henri Duval, aged seventeen, a Jew, was haled before the Police Court charged with having attempted to commit suicide on the voyage and wilfully disobeying the commands of hi_ s sperior officer. The captain stated that during the voyage he considered Duval to be malingering. Later Duval was caught in the act of mounting the bulwarks. He was held and handcuffed and kept locked no. Witness admitted deducting £‘s 10s from accused’s wages in fines for disobedience.

Accused, in evidence, stated that he had been persecuted by the crew, and members of the crew had ridiculed his religion. On one occasion he had been handcuffed for eight hours. Mr. Goldstone asked that the boy should be allowed to sign off the ship, as the Jewish Charitable Society was willing to look after .him. Accused was an accomplished linguist and had been educated as an interpreter. The master of the ship asked that deterrent punishment be inflicted. Mr. Poynton : He has received sufficient punishment. I cannot, however, allow him to stay in the Dominion. Counsel gave notice that representations might be made to the/Minister for Justice to secure his release from the ship. The accused was remanded on bail, which was fixed at' £25.
