—■ MONTH I.V MEETING. There was a full attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hawera School Committee last night. Mr J. \\. Harding presiding. the proposed Bill in connection with fclie hihle-i 11-schools question was briefly discussed, and the following morion moved oy Mr Coring and seconded by -Mr Hurrell was passed - “That tins committee approves of a system ct Bible reading in schools, provided that no sectarian issue he allowed and the conscience clause be included in the proposed Bill for teachers and scholars, further, that a, copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Prime Minister and the member for the district. Ihe proposal that the school should open at 9 a.m. instead of 9.30 a.m. was rejected. Messrs Goring and Hurrell were appointed as the visiting committee for the month of July. The new schedule of duties for the caretaker, to operate as from August 1, were approved and adopted. The matter of repairing damage caused bv the recent storm was left in the hands of the grounds committee. Jt was decided to have three more trees on the eastern side of the school ground removed, as they appeared to a serious danger and were unsightly. The chairman lepoited that the committee had secured the building in Dives Avenue for a shelter shed, and it had now been placed on the new site ready for the Board’s architect to inspect and suggest alterations. -Mr A. Lees was unanimously recommended as a nominee lor the Education Board. Messrs Brough and Harding were nominated as two members for No. 1 group ol the School Committees’ Association. The headmaster reported that the attendance lor the last quarter had been very low, the average being abut/! 594 cut oi a roll number of approximately 700. The diphtheria epidemic seemed to have abated, only Giie case having been reported since'the holidays. He had taken an informal vote of pupils in Standard 111. to VI on the question of the change in school hours after having asked them to consult their parents, and the result was a vote of 1 250 in favour of the: change and 76 against.
