MR AND MRS A. H. GUY F A R E WELLED. i A large gathering or residents of Mangaioki and A'isitors from the surrounding district attended the farewell social tendered in the Alangatoki Hall on Tuesday evening to Mr and Mrs A. H. Guv, who are leaA’ing Mangatoki in the near future. Evidence of the esteem in which Mr and Mrs Guy are he hi by all those with whom they have been associated during I their sojourn in Mangatoki was given ! in the freely expressed regrets oA’er j their departure, which were mingled with the numerous wishes extended for their future happiness. A dance programme arranged by Mr L. Astbury as M.C., together with vocal items rendered by the Misses R. and AL Evans, R. Lambic. D. Nicholas, I and Mr L. Pease, combined in making the fareAvell eA'ening an enjoyable one, ■ which should be long remembered by I the guests of honour and all present. I The Misses G. Mickelson and M. Guy also danced a Highland fling in cos- | tume. Miss SAvindlehurst played the ' clance music for the programme dances, a number of extras being contributed by other players. { During the eA'ening brief speeches, appropriate to the occasion, were delivered by Messrs D. L. A. Astbury, TT . B. I earon , and C. McGuinness. Air Astbury said that during the time Air and Airs Guv had resided in Mangatoki they had gained a high! place in the esteem of ail Avho had \ come in contact Avith them, and it Avas fitting that on the eve of their depar- ! ture their friend should assemble to giA'-e expression to that esteem. As one who had lived (.-lose to Air Guv. he had found-their guest to he possessed of many merits and no demerits. He was exceedingly sorry that Air Guv Avas leaving, because ‘during the four years Mr Guy had been living at Alanagatoki lie bad shown that he would prove as desirable a- settler there as lie had previously proved in other places. Afr Astbury said he felt that in expressing keen regret over the departure of their guests he Avas voicing the feeling of riie whole district, hut he Avas sure that wherever Air and Mrs Guv Avent they would prosper and gain the same regard with which thev were looked upon locally. Speaking as one who had known him when he had lived at Raponga, Mr rearon referred to Mr Guy ns one of the most progressive men thev had known in that- township. Whilst there be had been prominent in all enterprises undertaken for the betterment of the town, and Raponga owed a great deal to his activities. Mr Fearon ' also referred to Mr Guy’s enthusiastic I suppoit of athletic sports, and as pfesident oi the Rugby Union expressed j that body’s high appreciation of the ; services he had rendered as a referee. ' Ihe union AA’ould be exceedingly sorry to lose him, and hoped that Mr Guy would remain in the province ancl continue to officiate as one of their best referees. Mr McGuinness said lie had known Air Guy for a considerable number of years, and had also knoAvn him as a neighbour, and could heartily endorse tlm remarks of the previous speakers. Referring to Air Guy’s public seivices, ’ “ e weaker said they had to thank him for playing a big part in the installation of electricity in Raponga and its 1 sru'i’oundmg district. In conclusion, : Air McGuinness joined with all of Air \ an d Mrs Guy’s friends in wishingjbhem ’ everything of happiness in the future and assuring them that a warm welj come Ayould he extended should thev at any time return to Mangatoki. Air and Airs Guy Avere then present- ■ ed Avith a handsome sih’er tea service. In making the presentation on behalf 5 of the settlers of the district, Mr Astbury asked that Mr and Mrs Guv ’ NOlllil accept it as a memento of their stay in .Mangatoki and as a token of 1-lie goodwill of the people of the dis- ! iHl ' 1 AVbile regretting their departure, he had much pleasure in wishing I all happiness and prosperity in j their future sphere, and stated that whether they were near or far they I I Hol dd always occupy a place in the Jioa i T ri; o! t IIP ill Hi] y f FIG tidt tilOy \\yjo j .j er <vinp; behind His rail for musical t hr> nr, urs was enthu.riaslically responded P All G ti\ , in response, said he was at a loss to express the yery sincere appreciation felt* by Mrs Guy'and him-' self of the kindness which had ! [nonipted the presentation of the handsome gilt, which would always serjvhI as a reminder of their kind friends and the happy days they had spent in - Alangatoki, and Avould be regarded as one of their most treasured possessions. 1 He thanked the speakers for their courteous remarks, and regretted that fc ne had not been more Avoidin' of them during the past few years, ivhen lie had not been able to take the same active t interest in public affairs as he had previously. fn conclusion, he asked that t the very best thanks of Airs Guy and himself would be accepted for the generous presentation and for the • honour conferred upon them by the s : assembly that evening.
