ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
ENGINEER KILLED. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TIMARU, June 27. JM’nest Lomond* aged 35* married* an engineer at the local brick works, was pulling off a belt on an engine in order to stop it at noon to-day when he became caught in the belt and was twisted round the shaft. His bodv was feavtulfy mutilated, having to be cut from the shafting. HEAD CRUSHED. ‘ TIMARU, June 27. A young man named Norman 4 Gould, aged 22, died to-day after being mushed by the cow-catcher of an engine in the cleaning sheds on Friday night. He was found by a fellow workman with the cow-catcher pressing his head. Gould had been in the cleaning pit, against the lip of which his head was crushed. It is not known how he was caught hv the engine. He was unconscious when found, and no cry was heard from him. He died without regaining consciousness. He was removed to the hospital. “SICK OF IT.” CHRISTCHURCH, June 26. lam sick of it. [ would stand up against a post and let someone shoot at me. These were- the words which Charles Gimblett, whose body was found floating in the Eyre River with Ins throat cuf, used when lie spoke to his son last week. At the inquest held to-day evidence was given that Gimblett had been very depressed lately, probably due to family discord. The wife said the discoid was due to Gimblett s drinking habits. The coroner said the case was a simple and sad one. The verdict returned was that Gimblett committed suicide bv cutting his throat.
