PARIHAKA SHIELD. AVON BY TARANAKI. Lol 11 a challenge match for the Parihaka Shield, contested at NormanbV yesterday, the Taranaki tribe’s Rugby to defeated Ngatiruanui, the previous holders of the shield, by 12 noints to ml. During the early stages the shield aerenuers showed to advantage in forward division play, and made the game interesting, but in the second spell they ueie unable to compare favourably with the superior pace and combination of the Taranaki team. The white forwards, led by Tamate and Manuel, made a brilliant clearance from their own 25. and at half-way Manuel picked up, and fending off two defenders made a sensational run to score a try midway between the goal and touchline. Again the kick failed. In subsequent plav the whites combined well, and H ere constantly dangerous. An interchange of passes finally saw Manuel transfer to Tito, who went in for another unconverted try. Full time sounded with the score: Taranaki ]2. Ngatiruanui nil.
