The Prime Minister (Mr. W. F. Massey) stated yesterday that two new appointees to the Legislative Council are Mr. A. S. Malcolm (formerly M.P. for Chitha) and Mr. Vernon Reed (formerly M.P. for Bay of Islands).—Press Assn. Two of the Taranaki representatives of the New Zealand football touring team, Messrs Brown and Hart, left Hawera by the mail train this morniiig.
Two senior members of the New Zealand Hansard staff, Messrs Sila s Spragg nnd J: M. Geddins, are voluntarily retiring on superannuation this month. Both gentlemen were appointed to Hansard staff in the ’eighties. When these resignations take effect there will be three vacancies on the staff. The death of Brigadier-General H. Finn, formerly Director-General of the Commonwealth forces, aged 72 is reported by a Sydney cable. ~ r - A. Mason, first assistant at the Hutt High School 7 has been appointed headmaster of the Lansdowne School, Masterton. Mr. F. P. Admiral Sir Charles Madden was Commander-in-Chief of the Atlantic Fleet from 1919 to 1922 receiving this appointment after "a’ distinguished career in the Navy during the war He was chief-of-statf to the f' Commander-in-Chief from 1914 to 191 G, and was appointed second in command of the Grand Fleet in 1917 Admiral Madden is a brother-in-law of Ford Jellicoe, having married Miss Constance Cayzer. sister of Ladv Jellicoe.
afr V . S. Rovce, .Labour member for the House or Commons for the Holland-luJi-Boston seat, died in London on Monday (statos a oahle message) on top of a ’bus while en route to the iiouse of Commons. Re started life as an apprentice to a builder, and went to South Africa at the age of 18. Eventually he became managing director of the Transvaal Engineering and Contracting Company. Returning to England, lie twice fought the Holland division as a Unionist in 1910 and as a Labourite in 1918. Recently lie was a large land-owner in the Spalding district. Mr Royce was returning after consulting his wile and friends regarding the Governorship of Tasmania It us understood that he intended to notify Mr H. Thomas (Colonial secretary) of his acceptance. A cablegram published yesterday stated: The Daily Express says that Air W. Stapleton Royce. a Socialist member of the House of Commons, is likely to he the next Governor of Tasmania. He is an agricultural expert.
