ANNUAL CONFERENCE, (From Our Special Reporter). AUCKLAND, June 24. Hie Natinal Dairy Association, Auckland, was the centre of dairy interests this week, when delegates representing all the dairy factories in the North Island met at- the thirtieth annual meeting of the association, at which there were present over two hundred, there was a larger number from Taranaki than any other district. Mr A. Morton, president, was in the chair. It is interesting to note that the first meeting was held at Stratford, the genesis of the association coming from Taranaki. After one or two years the locale was altered to. Palmerston North, w’here the meetings were held for about twenty-six years until this year, when it came to Auckland. An apology for non-atendance was received from Mr J. R. Corrigan, M..P, The minutes of the last meeting were confirmed. All directors were present, and they included-Messrs Forsyth and Murdoch. Mr H. Singleton, director of the Dairv Division, and Mr W. E. Gwillim were also present. The secretary gave notice of several social functions to which the delegates w’ere invited. The Auckland people had decided to do their best to entertain the visitors ana show’ the interesting resorts round Auckland and the harbour. The roll call showed that the fallowing Taranaki factories were represented: Awatuna, Alton, Ararata, Cardiff, Eltham, Hawera, Jolls, Kaponga, Kaupokonui, Kakaramea, Kaimata, Kaimore, Lepperton. Mangorei, Midhirst, Mangatoki, Mells, Manutahi, Moa, Melrose, Ngaere, North {Taranaki, Xormanby, Omata, Pihama, Pembroke Road, Rotokare, Riverdale, Rahotu, Stratford _ Tikorangi, Tariki, Tepopo, Uruti, Whenuakura. Waitotara, and Maitara. Representatives of several agents and firms were also present. An apoiogy wa from the Hon. J. B. Gow 7 . A motion, of condolence with the l director, Mr E. Allen, whose wife died while he was away in England, was passed, and delegates stood out of respect to her mem of y. The presilent, in an interesting address, expressed his pleasure at meeting for the first time in Auckland, and thanked the people for their generous offers of entertainment. He sketched the _ wonderful progress of the dairy industry, giving the figures from 1895, when the tojal value of produce wan under half a million, to" 1901, when the sum first reached a million, and on tiff the present day, when the wonderful figures of nearly eighteen millions were received for dairy produce, and said he believed there w r as no reason why the output should not be doubled. He dealt in the course of his address with the value of herd testing, and the work enthusiastically carried on by the Dairy Division under Air Singleton. He paid a tribute to the factory managers tor getting such good results under adverse climatic conditions during tile past season. He referred to complaints that the quality of the cheese suffered on the other side of the world, and urged' that- a complete investigation should be made by the Department. He l stated that much of the wonv re the shipping contract done previously by the N.D.A. and the S.I. Dairy Association will be done by the Control Board, but details would still be carried out by the associations. Dealing with, finance, the president said the position showed a very satisfactory improvement. He referred to the amount voted to the Norm'anby Dairy Co., £2OO, in connection w’ith the Supreme Court case re increased shares. In conclusion, he said that he believed the position would be further improved in the future by a decrease in the expenses. The motion for the adoption of the report and balance-sheet was seconded by Mr Williams (Kairanga), and was carried after some discussion. The meeting was continued during the afternoon discussing various remits and notices of motion. To-night the annual meeting of the Rennet Co. will be held, and to-morrow will be devoted to addresses by men expert in various aspects of the industry.
