HEART BEATS BY TELEPHONE.

MARVELLOUS FEAT IN PHOTOGRAPHY. A new photographic wonder, a picture of heart-beats photographed by telephone, was shown by Mr. T. Thorne Baker during a fascinating lecture on “Photography in Science, Industry, and Medicine,” at- the Royal Society of Arts recently. Mr. Thorne Baker threw on the screen a cardiograph recorded in a consulting room half a mile away from the patient. The muscular contraction involved in the heart-beat creates a slight electrical current, which is transmitefcl over the telephone. At the other end of the line the current is picked up by an electrical instrument, which throws on a photographic plate a light correspond, mg with the heart-beats. “This examination of a patient by .joint telegraphy and photography opens up an astonishing field of possi'bilitv,” added Mr. Thorn© Baker. Another example of the interesting nse-s to which photography is being put was given in connection with X-ray experiments “To-day,” he said, “the early signs of tuberculosis can lie seen in a good radiograph or the lungs with so much suoee,ss_that. the. miners’ of Wit water xrand. in South Africa, are examined monthly by X-ray photography, and on this examination of their lungs depends the permission for them to continue to work in the.mines.”

THREE BOTTLES AT A REHEARSAL. The members of an Amateur Theatrical Society wore rehearsing the other evening, when it was observed thatthree of the Company had each a bottle of Baxter’s Lung Preserver. It appears that they were suffering from slight hoarseness and they had found “Baxter’s” a wonderful help. The good judgment of the Stage has been hacked up by the public of New Zealand for the last 58 years. Baxter’s Lung Preserver is now the favourite cough and cold remedy from Auckland to the Bluff. Sheer merit alone has put “Baxter’s” in this position. It is also a tonic as well as a cold specific, enriching and renewing the bloods cells, and toning up the system generally. You can get a generous-sized bottle from any chemist or store for 2s 6d; or, better still, get the family size at 4s 6d. 51.
