PARIS OLYMPIC.
AUSTRALIAN CYCLISTS. HIGH PRAISE GIVEN. by Cable—press association—copyright Received June 23, 1.55 p.m. m, . • PARIS, June 22. liie Australian Olympic cyclists, Dempsey, Coppins and Broadbent, each w°n his heat in the 500 metres race at tiie \ elledrome to-day, but were beaten m the semi-finals. Fiance’s best amateurs were competing, and inexeperienee alone handicaniied the Australians who rode surprisingly well for the first lace since landing. Experts consider Dempsey and Coppins undoubtedly equal to Trance’s fastest riders. They are not accustomed to a high backed ti ack near the finish, where they were outpaced by the Frenchmen, who were allowed liberties in crossing and bumpin S "kjch would not he tolerated in Australia. But for last minute intervention by Mr Voss the Commonwealth Government representative the Australians would not have been allowed to compete, as they did not possess the necessary riding licenses. —Aus -N Z Cable Assn.
