PERILS AT SEA
VESSELS COLLIDE. BOTH. SERIOUSLY DAMAGED. PASSENGERS SAVED. PROMPT ACTION BY CAPTAIN. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received June 23, 10.55 a.m, VANCOUVER, June 22. There were 700 passengers aboard the Metagoma when she collided with the Clara Camus. Both vessels were seriously damaged. The Meta gam a. has arrived at dock, and the Clara Camus was beached. The Metagama’s passengers tell a story of wonderful seamanship. Cabins were stove in, but fortunately the occupants were at breakfast. The passengers rushed on deck as the craft was sent reeling by a-‘heavy blow on the starboard side. The captain immediately Hooded the porf’ ballast tanks, listing the ship over so as to raise the gaping hole, on the starboard out of the water. The passengers behaved splendidly, a mess boy playing the bagpipes as the ship heeled over at a dangerous angle. The captain’s prompt action saved the vessel from foundering.—Sydney Sun Cable. THE CLAN MACMILLAN. Received June 23, 11.5 a.m. DELHI, June 22. The Clan Macmillan was three days out from Calcutta hound for Fiji. She carried no passengers. The crew numbered about sixty. The chief port officer has received no further news of the ship or boat-;. He points out that reports indicate that there was fine weather in the area, in which the ship was sunk, and the cause of the sink ing remains unknown.
