FRENCH POLITICS.
RETRENCHMENT POLICY. 87 GABLE—PEIBB ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT PARIS, June 19. Prior to the departure of M. Herriot, the new French Premier, for London, the Chamber passed a vote of confidence in the Government by 313 votes to 234. The Socialists’ attitude to the Herriot Government was defined by a statement of M. Paul Faure in the Chamber, namely, that the Socialists would retain independence, hut support the Government so long as the latter remained true to its own principles. M. Herriot foreshadowed stringent financial retrenchment and the rigorous collection of income tax. He declared that at present there was no question of a capital levy. A supporter of M. Poincare, M. de Selves, has been elected President of the Senate by 151 votes to 134 given for M. Herriot’s candidate, M. Beinvenmartin.
