FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.

PROTECTIVE measures. 'Alien the dreaded foot and mouth disease ";is devastating the herds in tile o-id Country there was eonsideraoie concern m New Zealand that the disease might be brought to this coanLiy tn rougii the straw used in packing goods exported from Britain. The New fi + Ii Government took action, and mat the Britisn manufacturers have •sought to have proper precautions taken is evidenced by a circular letter issued to us members by tiie English China luanutacturers’ Association. The circu--1 ' 1 . ,JG<m handed to u s by Mr R T Bullock, and reads as follows , “Peking for New Zealand.—We mu e received a communication from the l\ew Zealand Government. Offices. dJo. Strand, London, W.C., to the effect that any china or eartlnyrvare goods consigned to New Zealand from Great Britain if nacked in hav or straw must have such packing ‘destroyed within three days of the commencement or unpacking, or otherwise we must pack the goods in hay or straw hat ha.s oeen disinfected according to regulations laid dowm. The latter method is impossible, and if persisted in would be serious for all parties concerned. The members of this association will therefore continue to take advantage of permission to continue to pack goods with straw in the usual wav and to put a note on each invoice to this effect. We have no doubt that you can, without trouble or incQnvenience, arrange that the packing rnatei ial is destroyed at destination—wherever that may be—within' three days or the commencement of unpacklng. If you desire further copies of this communication to send out to your clients, same can be obtained from these offices.” That the circular lias been acted upon is proved by an invoice received bv the same mail by Mr Bullock from a British manufacturer, bearing a typewritten note directing that the straw used in packing be destroyed " ithm three days oi the commencement of unpacking. Ibis matter was considered by various branches or the Farmers’ ’ Union and the Chambers of Commerce, including the Haw-era body.
