At the annual meeting of the North Otago* branch of the Farmers’ Union to-aav, the following motion was uuanimously carried; “That in the opinion or this meeting of farmery it is unwise and impolitic to engage in the stnte of party politics, and thtf£ omy general politics as they affect tne life and well-being of primary producers oi th a whole community should be touched by the Farmers’ Union; that the Uamaru branch of the Farmers’ Union strongiy denounce the attitude of two of the executive members of the 'union namely Messrs Hardmg and Ross—m advocating a country or farmers’ party.” CAMBRIDGE IMPROVEMENTS. . CAMBRIDGE, June 21. A poll was carried yesterday on the question of raising £37,900 for a gravitation water supply and £13,535 for bitumen streets.
SEQUEL TO GRASS FIRES. CHRISTCHURCH, June 20 Alter a hearing extending over seven days a case in which Robert Kerr Mcfarmer of Parnassus, claimed £1913 10s, and Alister Malcolm Mcharlane, claimed £4OOO from Norman Jtutherford. of Mendip Hills for damage alleged to have been done bv a grass fire, which spread from defendant’s property, was concluded in the Supreme Court to-day, the jurv findimr tor the plaintiff by a three-fourths majonty lor lesser amounts than those claimed. Mr. Justice Adams was on the bench and there was a common jury of twelve MacFarlane was awarded LoOO damages and MeCandless £526. An application by counsel for the defendant to move for a nonsuit and a new trial on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence was granted.
