ALLEGED THEFT.

ACCUSED REMANDED. William A. Reid, who was arrested in Wellington, and was brought up to Hawera last night, appeared before Mr J. G. Osborne, J.R., this morning charged with the theft of the sum ol ; £:2 14s od, the property of Halliwell, Spratt, I'homson and Horner, solicitors, of Hawera. Mr J 3. O’Dea, foV the accused, entered a idea of guilty, and asked for bail, but'Cunstable Toeker said he had been instructed to oppose bail, and asked for a remand until Thursday. Mr O’Dea .pointed out that accused had pleaded guilty, and had been advised by him to make a clean breast of the whole affair. Reid had given himself up voluntarily to the police. Constable Toeker said that this last statement was hardly correct, as Mr Walkley had seen Reid in Wellington and had informed him that the police were looking for him. There were other charges pending. Mr Osborne said that under the circumstances he would grant hail for £IOO, self £IOO and one surety of £IOO. accused to he remanded until Thursday next.
