ELECTION RESULTS. STATE OF PARTIES. “BE OF GOOD CHEER.” BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPY RIGHT CAPETOWN, June 18. The latest election returns show the state of the parties to be as follows: — South African Party 46 Nationalist Party 41 Labour Party iy independent I There are still twenty-nine results incomplete. Two Ministers, Colonel Mentz (Minister for Defence) and Mr Malam (Minister tor Mines) were defeated. Mr Robertson, ex-Administrator, was also defeated at Wakkerstroom, where there was an unexpected Nationalist gain. The Nationalists also gained an old stronghold at Los berg. Other Nationalist gams were Alainco, Rustonberg, \ enter.sdorp, and Heidelberg. Three Ministers (Messrs Smartt, Reitz anil Watt) were re-elected. Twelve members have offered their seats to General Smuts. In a message General Smuts, in thanking his committee, says: “Be of good cheer. From, the wider viewpoints which shape our national policy, our failure may yet prove to be a blessing in disguise. My faith in the future remains as strong as ever. Although the immediate outlook before the country is gloomy enough, in that faith we hold on unflinchingly.” The position now is that twenty-one results are awaited, and if these are the same as at the last election, the Nationalist-Labour pact will have a majority of twenty-two over the South African Party.
