MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
WEEKLY SITTING. The weekly sitting of the Hawera Magistrate’s Court- was held to-day, Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., presiding. FIRST OFFENDING INEBRIATE. A first offending inebriate was fined 7s 6d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment in .the Hawera lock-up. CONVICTED. FOR THEFT. George W. E. Leach (Mr. Houston), who was before the court last Thursday for the theft- of :.a- butt gauge, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence ih six months’ time, he to report as if on probation in the meantime. BY-LAW CASES. For leaving a motor car standing in Argyle Street without- lights attached, R. Corkill was fined 30s 'and 7s court costs. \ Clarence Fowler was charged with driving a motor lorry along High Street without a rear light. Mr. Bayley said that defendant was late in getting back from New Plymouth, and as he was carrying benzine he was afraid to light his rear lamp. His Worship pointed out the danger in carrying benzine at night, and fined defendant £2 and 7s court costs. For driving a horse and cart along Ketemarae Road without lights, Henry Waitai was fined £1 and 7® court costs. Wai Wai Tamahiri was fined 10s and 7s court costs for leaving a motor car standing without lights on the Mountain Road. , For driving a horse and gig along Mountain Road without lights, Abraham Wliana was fined £1 10s and 7s court costs. Martin Wharemata was fined a similar amount for leaving a horse and cart in Stafford Street, Normanby, withoutthe wheels of the cart being locked. Billy Kapa, who was similarly charged, was also fined £1 10s and 7s court costs. Jack Wee On and Kee Sue were charged, on the information "of the borough inspector, with failing to keep rubbish in a special receptacle. Tim borough inspector stated that the back premises of the Chinamen were littered with rubbish, thereby constituting a menace to health. Several warnings, had been issued. A fine of £3 and 7s court costs was im nosed. R. B. Murray (Mr. Bayley) was fined 10s and 7s court costs * for driving a motor lorry without a rear lio-ht in High Street, For riding' a bicycle without a light in Waihi Road, Clive Dowdle was fined 10s and 7s court costs. BREACH OF DESTITUTE PERSONS ACT. For disobedience of a maintenance order, Frank Milham was fined 5s and ordered to pay solicitors’ fees amounting to a guinea. AN ILLEGAL RECEIPT. E. R. Hone was charged with a I breach of the Stamp Duties Act, in that- he issued a receipt for two guineas with only a penny stamp attached. Sergeant Henry stated that an officer of the Agricultural Department- had repairs done to a car at Hone’s garage, and on paying for the work he received the receipt described. The receipt was sent in in the usual way to' the department, and the breach was there noticed. Hone said he had issued the receiptabout the time the penny post was reinstated, and he. thought that the same applied. His Worship said the department was fairly helpless in this connection, and it was only the receipts which came before the Audit Department that they were able to proceed upon. However. in a very limited field he had had thirty similar cases in the district between Hawera and "Waverley during the past- six months. Hone would be fined £1 and 7s court costs.
