FALSE DECLARATION. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) INVERCARGILL, June 18. A returned soldier pleaded guilty to making a false statement to a pensions officer regarding money he possessed when applying for an economic pension. It was explained that a considerable part of the. money was due to his mother for board. The pensions officer said the defendant’s explanation was quite credited, and he did not press for a heavy penalty. The magistrate, Mr. Cruickshank, said it was only through the utmost vigilance that the Department saved the country from a. large expenditure owing to’ declara, tions. Defendant was fined £5. A. AND P. ASSOCIATIONS. PALMERSTON N., June 19. The annual conference of the North Island A. and P. Associations was held this morning. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr. M. A. Conway (Manawatu); vice-president, Mr. H. B. Stuckey (Dannevirke) ; hon. treasurer, Mr. J. M. Johnston (Manawatu) ; executive, Messrs, J. M. James (Masterton), J. Livingstone and C. Dermer (Dannevirke), E. R. Gal,pin (MactonL W. B. Grant (Taranaki), "VV. Perry (Masterton), T. O. Haycock (Wairarapa) and E. D. McLennon (Auckland). The president stated that all A and P. associations in the North Island, except one, had now joined. SPLIT BANK NOTES. CHRISTCHURCH, June 19. several split bank notes have been circulated here recently, mostly in the evening, when it is difficult to detect’ the fraud. NEW PLYMOUTH PORT. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 19. At the Harbour jioard meeting today the chairman announced that an agreement had been arrived at with the Railway Department securing road access to the wharves and providing ample accommodation for railway yards on the foreshore. Hitherto the Department has had a monopoly on the wharf, other traffic being debarred. MANAWATU SHOW. PALMERSTON N., June 19. For the third day of the National Dairy Show the weather was wet. Their Excellencies Viscount and Lady Jellicoe air rived by the Main Trunk express and were met at the station by the show officials and the Mayor. His Excellency inspected a guard of Boy Scouts who welcomed him. Later their Excellencies proceeded to the show, inspected the exhibits and were entertained at luncheon. Owing to the stress of weather the Boy Scouts’ rally in the afternoon was abandoned. THEFT FROM UNION. AUCKLAND, June 19. At the Police Court Thomas Ward Bromley, late assistant secretary to the Auckland branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union, was sentenced to twelve months’ gaol for the theft of £BO from the union funds. Mr. Poynton, S.M., said that stealing money from fellow unionists aggravated his offence, and refused to grant probation.
