ELECTION RESULTS. PREMIER DEFEATED. % ' GATNS BY LABOUR . BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT CAPETOWN, June 17. The Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa (General J. C. Smuts) was defeated in Pretoria West, where Mr. Hay (Labour) polled 1407 votes to the Prime Minister’s 1022. The latest returns in connection with the general elections show the state of the parties to be as follows: South African Party 25 Labour Party 18 Nationalist Party 12 Independent 1 Intense interest was shown in the elections. The Nationalists gained the Pretoria Central seat where Mr. Rooth (chairman of committees) was defeated. Labour gained the Germiston seat by a narrow majority. A notable defeat in that of Sir Abe Bailey for the Krugersdorp seat. A Nationalist defeated Sir Harry Graumann for one of the Pre-torian seats. The Leader of the Labour Party (Mr. Cresswell) was elected. Labour gained the Turffontein, Umbilo, North-east, Rand Springs and Boksburg seats, making their total gains so far eight. The South African Party hia-s gained three seats, the Nationalists three, and an Independent one. The polling shows an increase on the last elections.
