INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
STATISTICS FOR MAY. The prevalence of diphtheria was responsible for an increase in the* cases of infectious disease notified in the Wellington health district for the month of May. According to the bulletin issued on Monday, the total number of cases was 262, ‘ as against 230 for the previous period. There were 151 cases of diphtheria, compared with 133 for April. Wellington reported 32 cases, a decrease of one, while the figures from other hospital districts were: Palmerston North 30 (31), Taranaki 29 (14), Hawera 17 (2,), Cook 12 (9), Wanganui 10 (3), Neison 9 (1), Wairarapa 7 (5). Scarlet fever showed a decrease, but increases were reported in the cases of tuberculosis—a rise from 15 to 29—pneumonia, puerperal fever, and erysipelas. ’ The Taranaki returns for the week ended at noon on Monday are: Taranaki.—Dphtheria 12, tuberculosis 1, puerperal septicaemia 1. Stratford.—Diphtheria 1 Hawera.—Diphtheria 4.
