The local gasworks showroom was last week visited by a burly representative of the Maori race, who was courteously shown round by the manager, Mr Ileyes (says the Eltham Argus). On a gas stove being lit and the modus operand! explained, Henare was overcome with delight, exclaiming: “By gorrv, he te ferrah to cook te kai! I take one; I live te ten miles out.” “But where are you going to get the gas?” naturally enquired the manager. “Oh, te gas! Never mind te gas; te cooker 1 want!”
A fine specimen of a Maori pigeon was watched with great interest in Princes Street this morning. The bird had taken up it?; station on a telegraph wire outside the Courthouse. The Native Land Court is sitting, and the large number of Maoris gathered outside were keenly interested, as were many pakehas.
