OIL IN TARANAKI.

COMMENT BY MINISTER. CONVINCED OF THE PROSPECTS. Speaking at the opening of the State Fire Insurance Department’s new offices on Friday the Minister of Labour (the Hon. G. J. Anderson), who is also Minister of Mines, commented hopefully upon the New Plymouth oilfield. On one occasion when he had visited New Plymouth, the Minister said, he had ventured to make up rophecy. Already a vast amount of oil had at the time been obtained —more than anywhere else in New Zealand —and be was convinced that New Plymouth was going to have an oil-field. This raised ironical laughter at the time, but New Plymouth was going to have that oilfield. On taking over the portfolio of Minister of Mines he found that those prosecuting the search were now doing what should have been done years ago. Scientists who knew what they were talking about and had proved their worth in other parts of the world had examined the field and were convinced of its prospects. It would be very surprising, concluded the Minister, if they were not a success. Approached later by a Herald* reporter the Minister said he had nothing further to add to what he had already said except that the Government would give all reasonable assistance in exploiting the field as- it had done in the past.
