He put all his savings in bricks and mortar. His speciality was buying up old property and rebuilding. He bought decrepit buildings in good positions in New York and San Francisco, and erected in their places large residential flats, which he let at enormous rents. He also owned property in the West of London, from which he derived a large income. His' estate cannot be worth loss than £200.000 to £300,000 ” Mr. Hertz lived quietlv and modestly in a small flat in Hvde Hark Mansions. He made structural alterations which enabled him to display his “ma"ic” in unexpected fashion to bis guests. He caused furniture to disar>neay nrodnced “ghosts” at unexpected moments, and surprised md imused his visitors in a hundred different ways-
