GIRLS WARNED.
A JAVA PROPOSAL. That the need is urgent for strict investigation by the Commonwealth passport authorities in granting passports to young women to leave Australia to take up positions in Java is evident from a cable message which has been received by the general manager the Amalgamated Pictures, Ltd. (Air. YY. A. Gibson), from the representatives of the company in Java (Mr. J. H. Perry) says an Australian correspondent). The .wording of the message is :
Chief of police desires you to warn girls through, the Press of Melbourne and Sydney not to come to Java, One hundred have replied to advertisements. Also please advise the Passport Office the authorities are taking immediate action against the advertisers." It appears that some weeks ago an advertisement was published in Melbourne for a young girl to educate two children in Java. A Melbourne girl answered the advertisement, and some time after received a letter from a man in Java to the effect that the advertiser had gone to Europe with his family. The writer proposed; that portraits should be exchanged, and if the two were mutually satisfied the girl should go to Java at his expense. The offer was not accepted. Senator Pearce stated that he had received a dispatch from the British Consul-General at Batavia, strongly advising that Australian women should consult the British Consular authorities before accepting any offer of employment that might be made to them.
