PORT OF WANGANUI. CBY TELEGKAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.') WANGANUI, June 17. The great development of the export of butter and cheese from the port of Wanganui in recent years was continued for that just closing. Up to the end of May 154,239 boxes of butter were handled at the grading stores at Castlecliff, against 87,252 for last year, an increase of 66,987. In the same period 17,604 crates of cheese were handled, against 15,226 for last year, an increase of 2378. ACCIDENT INSURANCE. WELLINGTON, June 17. The President of the Trade's and Labour Council, Mr J. Read, stated today that the members of the Council unanimously favoured State monopoly of the workers’ accident insurance. Under State monopoly there was not a doubt that cheaper premiums would rule owing to the fact that there would be less overhead charges than under the present system when private companies were competing for trade. It was also held that the trouble which sometimes arose at present with regard to workers securing compensation would not be so likely to arise if the State bad a monopoly of the business. It had been unanimously agreed by the Council that the general question of compensation for accidents should be referred to the Parliamentary Committee of the Trades Council Federation, and the committee would go into the whole matter.
