ROOT-GROWING COMPETITIONS
AFRO A JUDGING, MANY GOOD CROPS. Great interest was taken in the judging at Auroa, and there was keen emulation amongst the entrants. There were a number of very good crops, and the general average was favourably commented on by Mr. Deem, who again acted as judge. Capital arrangements were made by the president (Mr. AV. F. Lyndon) and the energetic lion, secretary (Mr. J. C. Duff), and a busy day was spent. The ladies very kindly entertained the company at luncheon, and this ivas most heartily appreciated by all, and the thoughtful kindness was honoured by a. vote of thanks and musical honours. Before dispersing, Mr. Lyndon briefly expressed the hearty thanks of the branch to Mr. Deem for his unvarying interest and the care he took in judging; also his willingness to give advice on any subject that, gave difficulty to the farmers. He also paid a warm tribute to the Hawera Star for their continued interest and valued support in everything pertaining to the welfare of the farmer. Air. Deem briefly acknowledged the compliment,. and said the average was well maintained, but stressed the need for moie careful cultivation. The winning crops were as follows, two points being given for each ton in weight and ten points each for- cultivation and quality: MANGOLDS. H. H. Buxton, 72 tons 11 cwt: 143. 8, 7 lyg J. C.
