PEDIGREE JERSEYS.

SECOND NATIONAL SHOW AND SALE. GOOD ATTENDANCE OF BUYERS. PRICES NOT GENERALLY GOOD. The sale was continued yesterday afternoon, when, except in a. few eases, only fair prices were realised. In addition to the two firms mentioned, Mr. Williams sold on behalf of Newton Kins, Ltd. The highest price realised was that of v one hundred guineas, given by Mr. \\. P. Kirkwood after a keen duel with a southern buyer, for Mr. R. Cobbe’s heifer Arden’s Molina Queen, which was awarded second prize in her class. The first prize animal fetched only 43 guineas. None of the other prize winning animals succeeded in fetching the reserve put on them, and were passed in.

Commenting on the animals shown for competition, the judge (Mr. P. Ran ford) said that the bulls generally speaking were a good lot. The first prize winner and champion was not much ahead of the second and reserve, being better in head, horn, rein and skin, while: the second was better over the pin bones, but was inferior underneath. The third prize winner was also a nice animal, not far behind the other two. He considered that it was a. mistake to have all bulls in one class, and that it would have been better to have at least three classes, and if would be more satisfactory to the judge. It was difficult to select from babies, yearlings, two-year-olds and aged bulls.

The females were not so good, but one cow, otherwise outstanding, had a weakness in one quarter. This served to put her below the winners. 'The young animals were, generally speaking, better than the cows. First and second heifers were very nice youngsters. The third prize heifer, though a finely built animal, was hardly up to show form, but in the judge’s opinion well made above and below, though perhaps a little stocky. In presenting his firm’s cup to Mr. R. L. Horn, Mr. Robertson said Mr. Horn started some years ago. from scratch, got a grade herd and did so well that he secured up to- £SO for grade animals. Later he bought- the great bull, Owler of Puketapu, from Mr. Booth, of Middle Run, and commenced breeding pedigrees that combined type and production quality, and Juvept the board in the show-ring from Levin to Auckland. His bulls had secured first at the First National sale at Auckland, and had repeated the performance this year at Hawera. He had now the greatest pleasure in presenting the cup to Mr. Horn, junr., and Mr. Horn now wins the cup outright. He was proud to be able to do so, and said he felt sure his sons vould uphold their father’s name in the .show-ring. M*. H. Abraham, who had known Mr. Horn for many years, endorsed' the remarks of Mr. Robertson, and said he ielt sure the sons would carry on the record made by their father. He was pleased to be associated with the presentation. Mr'. R. L Horn, junr., came forward to receive the cup, and was greted with * “®arty cheers as he accepted it on behalf of his father. The remainder of the prize list was as follows : —.
